Michael Blaivas, MD, RDMS is the vice president of Emergency Ultrasound Consultants, LLC. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) and a fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians. After completing a residency in emergency medicine at the University of Michigan, Dr. Blaivas completed a fellowship in emergency medicine ultrasound at Christ Hospital and Medical Center in Chicago; the only emergency medicine ultrasound fellowship program offered at that time. During his training he focused on ultrasound research including new applications and the effect of emergency ultrasound on patient length of stay and satisfaction.
He has pioneered research in emergency ultrasound and is viewed as one of the most prolific researchers and authorities in emergency ultrasound with over 70 peer-reviewed articles and numerous book chapters. His current research interest include expanding the applications for ultrasound in the emergency and clinical setting.
Dr. Blaivas is certified by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (RDMS). He served as chairmain for the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) Ultrasound Section (2004-2005). He also was the chairman of the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) Ultrasound Interest Group (2000-2001). Dr. Blaivas is the first emergency medicine physician to be honored as a senior member of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (since 2004).
He has consulted for academic and private emergency practices alike, as well as surgical and primary care physicians. He currently is the director of emergency medicine ultrasonography and the director of the emergency ultrasound fellowship at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia.
